By VETTAPHARMA reporter – Derek Roche: Merck has announced two senior leadership appointments within its Healthcare business, naming Miguel Fernández Alcalde as Head of Global Commercial Strategy and Monia Vial as President of EMD Serono and Head of North America, effective immediately. The changes strengthen the company’s commercial leadership as it advances its healthcare transformation and global growth strategy.
Fernández Alcalde succeeds Andrew Paterson, who is retiring after 31 years with Merck. In his new role, Fernández Alcalde will lead the company’s global commercial strategy, overseeing efforts to accelerate portfolio growth and maximize the impact of Merck’s healthcare pipeline. He previously served as President of EMD Serono, Head of North America, and has also held leadership positions including Chief Operating Officer of EMD Serono, Head of Global Business Excellence & Innovation, and General Manager for Finland and Spain.
Monia Vial joins Merck from Ipsen Biopharmaceuticals, where she most recently served as Senior Vice President and Head of the U.S. Rare Disease Business Unit. With more than 20 years of pharmaceutical industry experience, Vial has held leadership roles spanning rare diseases, oncology, hematology, global brand strategy, business development, product launches, and lifecycle management. Earlier in her career, she held positions at AstraZeneca, Bristol Myers Squibb, and Shire Pharmaceuticals.
Both executives will be based in Boston, Massachusetts, and will serve on the Healthcare Executive Committee. Merck said Fernández Alcalde’s broad commercial and operational experience and Vial’s leadership in building a successful rare disease franchise position them to support the company’s long-term commercial ambitions.
