Novartis Reveals Innovative Kidney Disease Data at ERA 2026

By VETTAPHARMA reporter – Derek Roche: Novartis presented new kidney disease data at the 62nd European Renal Association (ERA) Congress 2026, highlighting advances across chronic kidney disease (CKD), IgA nephropathy, and complement-mediated renal disorders.

The presentations included new analyses for Fabhalta (iptacopan) in IgA nephropathy (IgAN), reinforcing reductions in proteinuria and supporting the company’s strategy of expanding complement-targeted therapies in renal disease. Data from the APPLAUSE-IgAN Phase III trial evaluated the impact of oral complement inhibition on kidney function preservation and disease progression.

Additional ERA 2026 presentations highlighted Vanrafia (atrasentan) in proteinuric kidney disease, including findings from the ALIGN Phase III trial, which assessed reduction in proteinuria and slowing progression of kidney damage in patients at high risk of renal decline.

Novartis also presented data involving complement pathway modulation and biomarker-driven approaches across rare renal diseases, reflecting continued investment in precision nephrology and targeted kidney therapeutics.

The breadth of data presented at ERA 2026 reinforces Novartis’ strategy of building a diversified kidney disease portfolio spanning complement inhibition, endothelin pathway modulation, and precision renal medicine, while expanding across both rare and chronic kidney disorders.

For patients, the latest findings may support improved long-term management of progressive kidney diseases, particularly conditions associated with high risk of kidney failure and limited treatment options. Oral therapies targeting underlying disease mechanisms may also improve treatment convenience and accessibility.

From a commercial perspective, continued positive data for Fabhalta and Vanrafia may support future growth in Novartis’ renal portfolio, particularly as kidney disease remains a major global healthcare burden with increasing demand for disease-modifying therapies.
